Count: how many?
A zone lights up on a map with no names: a region, a few neighbouring departments, or a circle around a city. How many people live there? How many districts does it hold? How many cities of more than 100,000? Slide to your estimate, then see the answer on the map.
How to play
- Look at the zone: one place in colour, two to four neighbouring places in one piece, or a circle of a given radius around a city.
- Slide to your estimate. The slider is logarithmic: a step at the low end is worth far less than a step at the high end.
- Check. The answer appears, and the map shows what was counted: the cities as dots, or the borders of the districts.
What is counted
- People
- For a place, its population; for a circle, the people living within it, summed on the GHSL 2025 population grid.
- Subdivisions
- The places of the level below: the departments of a region, the districts of a German state, the municipalities of a department.
- Cities
- Cities above a threshold, at one definition: municipalities, urban units, metro areas or dense centres. Urban units and metro areas are only asked about when every city in the zone has the same source.
Scoring
Up to 1,000 points per round, from the ratio between your estimate and the truth: 1,000 when exact, about 500 when you are twice too high or twice too low, 0 at ten times. Too high or too low costs the same.
Play anywhere
Countries of the world or of a continent, or the regions, departments, states or provinces of any country. Leave the choice open and it is drawn at random.
